It’s Sunday and you’re ready for some fresh homemade pasta! You have tons of fresh basil growing on your back deck, so you decide to whip up a quick homemade pesto sauce.
Checking the refrigerator and pantry, you find you have everything you need to create the perfect sauce. You pick your basil plant clean and bring in the large bowl of leaves into the kitchen. You get out a pot, fill it with water, and place it on the stove on medium heat to boil. Time to cue the music!
“Alexa, play Pink Houses by John Mellencamp.”
“Playing Pink Houses by John Mellencamp.”
John Mellencamp is on repeat, the food processor is out, and you put the basil in the food processor. The water comes to a rolling boil, so you put the pasta in to boil for 8-10 minutes. Dancing and singing your little heart out, you pour the pine nuts, garlic, salt, and Romano cheese over that beautiful bed of packed basil leaves.
If your’re looking to really make this basil pesto from scratch, the best way to make it is by hand with a mortar and pestle. Basil pesto is traditionally made by hand in a mortar and pestle. When using a mortar and pestle, the basil breaks down differently with the salt and fat, creating a more potent taste.
You turn the processor on low speed and blend the ingredients, slowly drizzling the extra virgin olive oil into the mixture. Everything emulsifies together and a delicious sauce is created in less than 10 minutes! You drain your pasta, pour the pesto over the pasta, mix together and plate for you and the family!
